FAQs for the CNIM Examination
ABRET expects that candidates for the CNIM examination possess skills beyond entry level. The CNIM examination is considered an advanced practice examination and requires a significant base of knowledge and experience.
ABRET expects that candidates plan, set up, and monitor each case listed on the CNIM Documentation Form. Candidates should be an active participant in each case, not simply an observer or trainee. Do not count cases toward the 100 required for examination eligibility unless you were the primary monitoring technologist.
ABRET expects that candidates read and follow all instructions in the Candidate Handbook and complete the CNIM Documentation Form with all information requested.
- As of 2009, at least 10% (10) of the documented cases must have been performed within twelve months of the application deadline.
- Do not document more than 100 cases. If more than 100 cases are submitted, only the first 100 will be considered.
- Only monitoring performed in the operating room during a surgical procedure should be counted toward the 100 cases required for examination eligibility. Pre-op testing and procedures do not satisfy this requirement.
- Deep Brain Stimulation cases do not count as NIOM at this time. The technical component is considered too limited to be counted as monitoring.
- The technologist's time (not the patient's time) in and out of the OR is required for cases performed after January 1, 2008.
- Do not list more than three cases a day, regardless of length or type.
- The 100 cases must have been performed by the examination application deadline, regardless of whether the candidate will have performed 100 by the examination date.
- Please retain a copy of the case documentation form for future reference.
- ABRET randomly audits applications and contacts the supervisor and/or the person who signed the documentation form to verify information. An audit is not the time to correct errors or change information. If an application is rejected, the candidate will be notified directly.
- Questions regarding the processing of CNIM applications or admission paperwork should be directed to the Professional Testing Corporation at 212-356-0660. The ABRET Executive Office does not have information on the status of applications.
